It may not be fair, but it’s a fact: people will make assumptions about your personality before you even open your mouth. And a lot of times, those assumptions turn out to be right.

Researchers at Sonoma State University in California found that by looking at a full-body photo, the average observer can detect four personality traits fairly well – extroversion, openness to experiences, likeability and self-esteem. People who SMILE tend to be extroverted, empathic, likeable, and have a healthy amount of self-esteem. If someone walks with their arms behind their back, that’s also a sign of high self-esteem. By having their chest exposed, they’re allowing themselves to be vulnerable. However, if they stand with their arms folded in front of them, that indicates an introverted personality.

And finally, those with distinctive appearances – such as a wild hair color and tattoos – tend to be open to new experiences, but not always likeable and self-disciplined.
