Wednesday, August 31st, 2011: On this day in 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash with her companion, Dodi Fayed, in Paris, France. Although press photographers had been pursuing her car, French courts determined that the paparazzi were not responsible for the crash but rather a driver operating under the influence of alcohol. Diana, a very popular British royal who worked on behalf of many charities, was mourned all over the world.
Today is “Love Litigating Lawyers Day.” Lawyer jokes abound, but when push comes to shove, these are the folks who can end up saving the day.
On this day in 1897 Thomas Edison received a U.S. patent for his motion-picture camera, known as the Kinetoscope, amid rival claims by inventors of similar machines. Edison had developed the camera and its viewer in the early 1890s and had staged several demonstrations.
Thursday, August 11, 2011: On this day in 1952 sixteen-year-old Hussein bin Talal was proclaimed king of Jordan after his father, King Talal, was declared unfit to rule by the Jordan Parliament on grounds of mental illness. King Hussein I remained on the throne until his death in 1999 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Prince Adballah.
On this day in 1965 the Watts riots began. A minor clash between the California Highway Patrol and two young blacks set off six days of riots in the Watts area of Los Angeles. Thirty-four deaths were reported and more than 3,000 people were arrested. Damage to property was listed at $40 million. The less-immediate cause of the disturbance and others that followed was racial tension between whites and blacks in American society.
Today marks the beginning of the “National Hobo Convention” in Britt, Iowa. Held since 1900 the National Hobo Convention celebrates current and retired hoboes and the independent lifestyle they lead.

Friday, July 29, 2011: Today marks the beginning of the “Lumberjack World Championships,” in Hayward Wisconsin. The “Olympics of the Forest” welcomes the world’s best lumberjacks competing in a variety of contests, including log rolling, tree climbing, and axe chopping.

On this day in 1981 nearly one billion television viewers in 74 countries tuned in to witness the marriage of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, to Lady Diana Spencer, a young English schoolteacher. Married in a grand ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the presence of 2,650 guests, the couple’s romance was for the moment the envy of the world.
