Here's a weird confession: I really love to clean my house. I don't always have time to do so, but when I do, I find it incredibly satisfying to see dirt and dust and obliterate them. I feel triumph when I remove smudges on walls, and when I make my sinks sparkle, I'm giddy. There's a certain Zen to it that grounds me and gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Over the years, I've accumulated some tips that may not be traditional, but they work. And they're much more fun than just a bunch of chemicals in spray bottles. Here are five of my favorite weird ways to clean some common household messes.
1. Use lemons to remove water stains.
You know those annoying ones in your shower? Just cut a lemon in half, rub, and watch them disappear.
2. Clean your toilet with Gatorade.
It's non-toxic, and it works. Just pour about two cups in, let it sit for about an hour, then brush and flush.
3. Clean grout with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Not your own toothbrush, of course, but they're perfect for getting into small spaces. A whitening formula toothpaste works extra well.
4. Use bread to remove marks from painted walls.
You need white not wheat, but just rub it onto marks and watch them disappear.5. Use mayonnaise to remove water marks on wood.
You know those annoying white marks? Mayo to the rescue. Just rub a couple of tablespoons of it on the mark, let it sit for about 15 minute, then wipe clean. Repeat until gone.
