Richmond Habitat ReStore donates Friday sales to help those affected by tornadoes in Oklahoma

Richmond, VA (May 22, 2013) — In the wake of the devastating tornados that hit Oklahoma on Monday afternoon and destroyed 2,400 homes and impacted over 10,000 people, the Richmond Habitat for Humanity ReStore is ready and willing to do something about it. This Friday, May 24th, the Richmond Habitat ReStore will donate all proceeds from sales that day directly to the Red Cross to help victims affected by the tornados.

“As the retail operation for a local nonprofit, we understand the importance of giving back to our community.  The devastationthat was caused this week is tremendous and they need all the help they canget.  This is the least we can do,” said Stephen Wilson, Vice President of Retail Operations at the Richmond Habitat ReStore, “We invite the Richmond community to join us in giving back this Friday by shopping at our store or donating funds towards the cause.”

Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has also agreed to match the amount raised by the ReStore to send to Red Cross.

“If we were in an area affected by such tragic events, we are sure other nonprofit organizations would reach out to help us,” said Nancy Melton, Vice President of Development and Marketing, “We just want to do what we can and let them know they are not alone during this devastating time.”

Several Habitat for Humanity ReStores throughout the country will also join in support of the victims in Oklahoma by donating their Friday proceeds.

Good
morning Bill and Shelly!
       Last
fall, one of our teachers here at Rural Point Elementary School (Hanover County)
was diagnosed with breast cancer that was going to require a double mastectomy.
She has two young sons that go here, one in fifth grade and one in third and her
husband is a Hanover County teacher as well.  In preparation for her surgery,
our teacher endured chemotherapy and the discomfort that that brings, all the
while keeping a smile on her face and lifting up everyone around her with her
incredible faith.
Due to time lost in early October because of her son’s medical
issues and subsequent hospital stay, our teacher did not have enough paid sick
leave built up for her to be out for an extended period of time.  All of this
has taken a toll on her family—the severity of the illness, the financial
burden, and still trying to keep up with her classroom.
This is where “A Little Good News” comes in!   A fund was set
up at a local bank to accept donations to ease this family's financial burden.
We, as a school staff, her church, and her neighbors have been continually
supplying food and meals since the diagnosis using an on-line sign-up
service.
But still, there was more we wanted to do without invading the
family’s privacy and there were parents of students that wanted to help.  Our
team of angels here came up with a few ideas to try and raise money to be
donated to the “Loving Friends Fund”.  We held a bake sale on the same night as
our Spring PTO meeting and Book Fair.  All items were baked by the staff and we
labeled who made them.  The students were thrilled to pick out goodies that
their teachers had made!  We raised over $2,600 at this bake sale alone!  When
parents found out what we were raising money for, they didn’t just pay the $1
for their baked item—many times they wrote us checks!!  One family brought in an
envelope that held five $100 bills and a card that was signed, “From a Loving
Student”.  As you can imagine, we were all moved to tears.
Another day, our principal, Nikki Currie, invited the staff to
make a donation to the “Loving Friends Fund” and we could wear jeans that day.
This raised $1,500!
For Teacher Appreciation Week, our staff requested that in lieu
of gifts to the teachers, that parents make a donation to the Loving Friends
Fund—this raised over $3,000!
Finally, our school wasn’t the only one getting in the act.
Cold Harbor Elementary School heard about our teacher’s illness and they held a
bake sale and they raised $475!
All of these gestures have been so heartwarming.  Our teacher
has had her surgery and is cancer free at the moment.  Every day she is getting
stronger and stronger and hoping to return to school shortly.

P.S.  Thank you also for having Kim Newlen on your radio program.  I was
able to get in contact with her to buy her specially designed camisoles for our
friend.  That has also been a blessing!  So, even you and Shelly have gotten
into the act to help our friend!

Sincerely,

Mary L. Hadra
